Finca Son Ru| A Sanctuary in Nature on Mallorca’s North-Western Coast

The road to Finca Son Ru climbs through ancient olive groves above the Valldemossa–Deià coast road before revealing the former 13th-century monastery set quietly into the hillside. From here, the north-western coast of Mallorca is in full view with beautiful bays, dramatic cliffs and the Mediterranean ocean.

There is a sense, on arrival, that the house has been waiting. Restored with a light hand, Finca Son Ru retains its monastic simplicity. Updates are subtle, allowing the building to function comfortably while preserving its calm restraint. Nothing feels excessive; nothing distracts from the setting.

Inside, the house is generous but grounded. Two reception rooms anchor daily life. One a former olive press room, or tafona, is now a space for quiet gatherings.

A smaller sitting room, centred around an inglenook fireplace, offers warmth during cooler months. Five light-filled bedrooms open directly onto terraces and garden paths, blurring the line between inside and out. The rooms are bright and spacious, furnished simply with raw, elemental materials that allow light and landscape to lead.

Outside, Mediterranean gardens frame a swimming pool where days can unfold slowly with leisurely swims, reading and long lunches beneath the sun. As evening arrives, the terrace becomes a natural gathering place, where the shifting light and expansive views invite conversation and a moment to take in the sunset.

Though the villa feels wonderfully secluded, it is deeply connected to its surroundings. The village of Deià lies just beyond the hills. A town long favoured by artists, writers and travellers drawn to its quiet beauty. Protected from mass tourism by its rugged geography, it retains an informal charm.

Cala Deià, a rocky cove with clear water and two much-loved restaurants, is close by, while Port de Sóller offers sandy beaches, a working harbour and the historic tram linking Sóller to Palma.

Finca Son Ru suits both retreat and togetherness. It is equally comfortable hosting meditative group stays, creative retreats as it is sun-filled holidays with family and friends.

It invites a slower rhythm and the opportunity to create memories that stay with you long after departure.
